Review: 'Star Trek: Tos' Season 2 on Blu-ray

3 October 2009 10:06 AM, PDT | Comicmix.com | See recent Comicmix news »

After a rocky first season that ended with the letter writing campaign to save Star Trek from cancellation, the second season opened in a horrible Friday night time slot but was a stronger series. Creator Gene Roddenberry continued to oversee everything as an Executive Producer but John Meredith Lucas took over as the line producer, aided by Roddenberry’s former secretary, D.C. Fontana becoming the script consultant. These changes made for a strong start as witnessed on Star Trek: The Original Series Season 2, now out on Blu-ray from Paramount Home Video.

Things had started to gel for the series as the characters became more sharply defined and the writers began to tailor the by-play accordingly. The backstory grew stronger so it was clear what the United Federation of Planets was all about and that the starship Enterprise was truly exploring space and fought only when necessary.

'Inglourious Basterds': Playing spot the Tarantino reference

19 August 2009 1:17 PM, PDT | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

Take your seats, class: Senior writer Chris Nashawaty continues his in-depth weeklong tutorial on all things Quentin Tarantino for the latest installment of EW University. Check out our gallery of 20 Tarantino movie and movie poster faves , our Quentin Tarantino trivia quiz, and our take on the original 1978 Inglorious Bastards. Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds: Playing spot the reference Any time you sit down to watch a movie directed by Quentin Tarantino, you're not just watching that movie, but all of the movies he's ever seen. Let's face it, the guy has never been shy or apologetic about his movie-love. You could say that when Tarantino name-checks some arcane chop socky movie or slyly alludes to a Eurotrash cheapie, he's giving a shout-out to the cognascenti -- his fellow movie geeks -- in the audience. In other words, when you watch a movie by Qt, you're actually watching two movies »

Shall we gather at the river?

11 June 2009 1:11 PM, PDT | blogs.suntimes.com/ebert | See recent Roger Ebert's Blog news »

The first time I saw him, he was striding toward me out of the burning Georgia sun, as helicopters landed behind him. His face was tanned a deep brown. He was wearing a combat helmet, an ammo belt, carrying a rifle, had a canteen on his hip, stood six feet four inches. He stuck out his hand and said, "John Wayne." That was not necessary.

John Wayne died 30 years ago on June 11. Stomach cancer. "The Big C," he called it. He had lived for quite a while on one lung, and then the Big C came back. He was near death and he knew it when he walked out on stage at the 1979 Academy Awards to present Best Picture to "The Deer Hunter," a film he wouldn't have made. He looked frail, but he planted himself there and sounded like John Wayne.

Memorial Day Special: Comic Legend Joe Kubert Discusses His Korean War Experiences

24 May 2009 5:33 PM, PDT | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

Joe Kubert is one of the legendary figures of the comic book industry, known as much for his famed art school as he is the artist of books like “Sgt. Rock” and “Hawkman.” He had narrowly missed World War II — and in fact one of his earliest jobs was working on “The Spirit” when Will Eisner was drafted — but in the early 50’s the creator’s number was called, and he joined the Korean conflict. The following interview is from 2001, where we discuss his wartime experiences, his involvement with war comics and…his connection to the Three Stooges? Yup. Read on, as we honor our fallen veterans.

You were in your teens in 1947. Do you remember where you were when Pearl Harbor was attacked?

I recall that rather vividly. I was in my early teens. I was born in 1926, so I was about 15 and was already working as a cartoonist. »
