Director: Michael Haneke Stars: Christian Friedel, Ernst Jacobi, Leonie Benesch (Full Cast) Studio: Sony Pictures Classics The Plot: A series of strange accidents occur in Eichwald, a small village in Protestant northern Germany, on cusp of World War I. The abused and suppressed children of the villagers seem to be at the heart of this mystery, but who is behind it?
THE BUZZ: Michael Haneke is no stranger to Cannes wins (White Ribbon earned 3 awards), but this is the first time the filmmaker has complementary Stateside love -- in the form of a Golden Globe nomination for Best Foreign Language Film. Part of me thinks this is his reward for not making another Hollywood film (his Funny Games remake fizzled, you might remember). Here's a review of the latest brutal offering from the always controversial writer-director, who really deserves his own Almodóvar-like retrospective sometime soon? Director: Jodie Markell Stars: Bryce Dallas Howard, Chris Evans (Full Cast) Studio: Paladin (II) The Plot: In 1920s Memphis, rebellious young heiress Fisher Willow (Howard) chooses an impoverished local (Evans) to be her escort to a societal event. A larger scandal ensues when she loses a valuable diamond earring at the party, making her date the prime suspect and creating a wider rift between Fisher and her family.
THE BUZZ: What's more surprising than the fact that Lindsay Lohan was originally set to star in this adaptation of a lost Tennessee William's screenplay? That no arty-minded branch of a major studio picked up the film. Oh, right, said branches don't really exist anymore. I haven't read an ecstatic review for the film; part of me thinks I'd prefer to see a really good high-school production of the story and nothing more. Director: Michael Spierig Peter Spierig Stars: Ethan Hawke, Willem Dafoe, Sam Neill (Full Cast) Studio: Lionsgate The Plot: In the year 2017, a plague has transformed most every human into vampires. Faced with a dwindling blood supply, the fractured dominant race plots their survival; meanwhile, a researcher (Hawke) works with a covert band of vamps on a way to save humankind.
THE BUZZ: I mean, why not try your luck at releasing a vampire movie this year? Beyond the Twilight saga, even the third Underworld movie proved it could make an equal profit to its predecessors. And distributor Lionsgate, who is refining its box-office prospects to focus more on horrors and thrillers, acquired this Australian production with the intriguing premise and cast -- though I'm not sure if this one will receive a Saw-like marketing push since the studio has vowed to keep marketing expenditures at a minimum. While I am all for this movie's success, directors the Spierig Brothers could be in for a come-and-go experience similar to their first slash at American success, the underseen Undead. Director: Miguel Arteta Stars: Michael Cera, Portia Doubleday, Ray Liotta (Full Cast) Studio: Dimension Films The Plot: Like most teens, young Nick Twisp (Cera) is ruled by his libido. And from the recesses of a trailer park in Northern California, Twisp concocts a plan -- make that multiple schemes -- to lose his virginity to a local girl, the precocious Sheeni Saunders (Doubleday).
THE BUZZ: Portia Doubleday, who lost her part on "The United States of Tara" as it went to series, won the coveted (?) role as Sheeni Saunders, which could give rise to Ellen Page-like sudden fame. The young actress joins a phenomenal cast that includes Steve Buscemi, Jean Smart, and Zach Galifianakis in this year-starting comedy (originally slated for December of 2008) that is sort of like a boy version of Juno? OK, enough with the Diablo Cody references ... Michael Cera's role here should be a natural extension of the characters he's played thus far, seeing that YiR plays a bit more with teen identity and the imaginable embarrassments that come to those who try to find a place to masturbate while living with dysfunctional parents in an RV. (Is that more difficult than having a crush on your cousin? Hard to say.) Though Twisp is written as a 14 year old, I imagine his age will be blurred to be more Cera-appropriate. Director: Anand Tucker Stars: Amy Adams, Matthew Goode, Adam Scott (Full Cast) Studio: Universal Pictures The Plot: Anna (Adams) has spent four years with her boyfriend, Jeremy (Scott), without a wedding proposal. During his business trip to Dublin, Anna opts to act on Leap Day, an Irish tradition that encourages women to propose to men on the date February 29th. A re-routed plane trip, however, lands her at the door of a Welsh innkeeper (Goode), who might offer a diversion of his own.
THE BUZZ: Most everyone involved with this romantic comedy is way too talented to be worked into such formulaic entertainment; however, that's the very thing that could make this a not-so-bad date movie. Would it be too much to ask for an actual-real surprise ending, though? Otherwise, you've seen 98% of the story outlined in the trailer. Message Boards: Cardiff Wales??? | How hot is Amy Adams? Director: Tim Allen Stars: Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver, Jeanne Tripplehorn (Full Cast) Studio: Freestyle Releasing The Plot: Tommy (Allen) has just been released from jail and moves in with his supportive sister (Weaver) and her family. The only trouble is explaining Tommy's whereabouts to grandma. The answer: "He's been in France!"
THE BUZZ: The fact that Tim Allen's directorial debut is being released by a truly indie studio is one of countless indications of Hollywood belt-tightening. Just a couple years ago, regardless of the movie's quality, you can imagine Touchstone Pictures putting out Crazy. You did hear we won't be seeing Allen, Travolta and company in the now-cancelled Wild Hogs 2, right? Seems to be a lot of story ingredients at work here, and I can't shake the notion that the movie looks as if it were made in the 1990s. The whole "he's been in France" thing seems to be a distraction from the foregone conclusion that the ex-con winds up with Rene Russo -- I mean, Jeanne Tripplehorn. Director: Joshua Goldin Stars: Matthew Broderick, Sanaa Lathan, Michael K. Williams (Full Cast) Studio: Magnolia Pictures The Plot: Ben Singer (Broderick) has his cynical worldview darkened by his roommate Ibu's sudden medical situation, though the arrival of Ibu's sister, Khadi (Lathan), might be the best remedy for both men's ills.
THE BUZZ: In dicey box-office times such as these, Josh Goldin's directorial debut might rake in its fortunes on VOD, but we're always up for Broderick in misanthrope mode, especially if he gets to vibe with Sanaa Lathan (we could say her name all day, every day) and Michael K. Williams, perhaps best known as Omar from "The Wire" -- who is the President's favorite TV character ever, just so you know. Message Boards: Awesome FIlm! Director: Rick Jacobson Stars: Julia Voth, Erin Cummings, America Olivo (Full Cast) Studio: Freestyle Releasing The Plot: Three bad girls travel to a remote desert hideaway to steal $200 million in diamonds from a ruthless underworld kingpin.
THE BUZZ: For the last 10+ years, Rick Jacobson has carved out a niche as director of tough-woman TV programs such as "Cleopatra 2525" and, most notably, "Xena: Warrior Princess". Nowadays he's working on the buzzing 2010 series "Spartacus: Blood and Sand" so I'm sure he had no trouble getting Lucy Lawless and Kevin Sorbo to take supporting roles in his tribute to the B-movie and exploitation genres. I'm always in for this sort of ride, but I have to say B-Slap could benefit from more savvy marketing -- somethings to distinguish it from the pack and the dozens of other things to do in the cities where it will be released initially. Couldn't the stars mud wrestle with drag queens in San Francisco during opening weekend before a midnight showing, then fly to Los Angeles and New York for similar wildness? Director: Brian Levant Stars: Jackie Chan, George Lopez, Amber Valletta (Full Cast) Studio: Lionsgate The Plot: Former CIA spy Bob Ho (Chan) takes on his toughest assignment to date: looking after his girlfriend's three kids, who haven't exactly warmed to their mom's beau. And when one of the youngsters accidentally downloads a top-secret formula, Bob's longtime nemesis, a Russian terrorist, pays a visit to the family.
THE BUZZ: The presence of director Brian Levant (Are We There Yet?, and a flood of '90s family movies) suggests this one is PG all the way, eliciting a ho-hum from those of us who prefer Chan in more fantastic situations. Good thing his Chinese-language projects continue to inspire hope. Director: Albert Hughes Allen Hughes Stars: Denzel Washington, Mila Kunis, Ray Stevenson (Full Cast) Studio: Warner Bros. Pictures The Plot: In a post-apocalyptic United States, a lone man (Washington) fights his way across the country in order to protect a sacred book that holds the secrets to saving humankind.
THE BUZZ: From Hell was the last Hughes Bros, movie, and that was back in 2001, a time when not every movie seemed to be adapted from a comic book or video game. 8 years later, they're back with an original screenplay, an increasingly rare occurrence these days. I'm hoping to be recovered from The Road before taking another post-apocalyptic trip, that said, if Viggo Mortensen's perilous TransAmerican trek charts with audiences, look for Warner Bros. to piggyback on the momentum and push the action angle here. This movie, and Sherlock Holmes, could be returns-to-form for producer Joel Silver, who has been taking a beating from industry watchers since he landed his last hit, V for Vendetta. Director: Mike Disa Stars: Hayden Panettiere, Glenn Close, Patrick Warburton (Full Cast) Studio: Kaleidoscope TWC The Plot: In their second adventure, Red Riding Hood (Panettiere) and the Wolf (Warburton) investigate the disappearance of Hansel and Gretel. THE BUZZ: "Hi, Hayden? You answer your own phone again? Cool, listen, would you like to step in for Anne Hathaway, who suddenly become unavailable for a sequel to ... no, not Prada ... no, umm, Brokeback Mountain didn't have a part two ..." Director: Scott Stewart Stars: Paul Bettany, Dennis Quaid, Charles S. Dutton (Full Cast) Studio: Screen Gems The Plot: God has lost his faith in humankind, causing him to send his legion of angels to bring on the Apocalypse. A remote diner becomes the battleground, where the Archangel Michael (Bettany) bands together with a group of strangers, though Michael's true focus is to protect a pregnant waitress whose unborn child is humankind's hope for survival.
THE BUZZ: Scott Stewart used to head up acclaimed (and now sadly defunct) visual effects house The Orphanage, so his ascent to the director's chair is totally logical. And this post-apocalyptic tale isn't based on a comic book or other pre-existing entity -- how novel for the new year. Truly, our first glace at Paul Bettany as an archangel and Doug Jones as the "ice cream man" (Jones compares his character to a "clown with a knife behind his back") and we were hooked. This is going to be outrageously awesome. Message Boards: I'm seriously confused...(SPOILERS) | Looks dreadful Showtimes | Trailers | Photos | Message Boards | User Comments | Reviews

Director: Michael Lembeck Stars: Dwayne Johnson, Ashley Judd, Julie Andrews (Full Cast) Studio: Twentieth Century-Fox Film Corporation The Plot: A bad deed on the part of a tough minor-league hockey player (Johnson) results in an unusual sentence: He must serve one week as a real-life tooth fairy.
THE BUZZ: The most excited we can get for this movie is knowing that Julie Andrews and Stephen Merchant co-star in it. Message Boards: A HOCKEY PLAYER? C'MON | The upcoming roles of Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson Showtimes | Trailers | Photos | Message Boards | User Comments | Reviews

Director: Tom Vaughan Stars: Brendan Fraser, Keri Russell, Harrison Ford (Full Cast) Studio: CBS Films The Plot: A drama centered on the efforts of John and Aileen Crowley (Fraser and Russell) to find a researcher (Ford) to develop a potential cure for their two children's rare genetic disorder.
THE BUZZ: While I personally don't gravitate towards films which dramatize illness -- why not just make a documentary on the subject? -- I find the real-life efforts of John Crowley inspiring. If you're unfamiliar with the Crowley family's ordeal, watch the featurette we have online. In the meantime, I have my eye on CBS Films and their inaugural feature; next up (I think) from the company is The Back-Up Plan, the artificial insemination rom-com (what a mouthful!) starring J-Lo-Wah-Wah and Alex O'Loughlin (boing!). Director: Mark Steven Johnson Stars: Kristen Bell, Josh Duhamel (Full Cast) Studio: Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures The Plot: Beth (Bell) is a young, ambitious New Yorker who is completely unlucky in love. However, when she impulsively steals some coins from a reputed fountain of love during a whirlwind trip to Rome, she finds herself aggressively pursued by a band of suitors. THE BUZZ: Spotted: Kristen Bell trying the Amy Adams approach to mainstream success, embracing a Disney-fied take on romance in NYC. What will Upper East Siders have to say about this, as well as Bell's rabid cult audience? Her fortune is shining in the Eternal City, though it's unlikely she'll ever head back to Neptune, CA for the once-promising "Veronica Mars" movie. In fact, I feel like this fantasy comedy mirrors Ms. Bell's career, since she's found luck on TV with as a guest star on "Heroes" and the titular narrator of "Gossip Girl", but she has yet to find a big-screen vehicle for her considerable success. Something tells me she might have pitched a coin or two when the cameras weren't rolling. Message Boards: A clip from 'When in Rome' | Only in a movie... Director: Martin Campbell Stars: Mel Gibson, Ray Winstone, Danny Huston (Full Cast) Studio: Warner Bros. Pictures The Plot: As homicide detective Thomas Craven (Gibson) investigates the death of his activist daughter, he uncovers not only her secret life, but a corporate cover-up and government collusion that attracts an agent (Winstone) tasked with cleaning up the evidence.
THE BUZZ: This movie radiates tension in and out! Packaged by super-producer Graham King (The Departed) right before the Screen Actor's Guild strike in 2008, Edge had trouble finding a studio, which was attributed, of course, to Mel Gibson being blacklisted by Hollywood. Not so! Said King. And then Robert De Niro backed out of the co-starring role right as filming began. To me, this is all merely early publicity for a project that doesn't fully engage me otherwise. In truth, De Niro being replaced by Ray Winstone drew my attention back to the film, and I'm primed to see how another terrific actor, Danny Huston, fits into the plot, which promises to twist until the end thanks to William Monahan, Graham King's Oscar-winning screenwriter from The Departed.
