Blu-Ray Review: HBO’s Epic ‘Rome’ Released in HD Series Set

24 November 2009 8:53 PM, PST | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – Just in time for holiday shopping, HBO has released both seasons of the epic “Rome” in one gorgeously-packaged Blu-Ray set with all 22 episodes and bonus material including audio commentaries and behind-the-scenes featurettes. Whatever you may think of the show, “Rome” was one of the most beautifully designed programs of the decade and a perfect fit for 1080p.

Blu-Ray Rating: 4.0/5.0

The winner of seven Emmy Awards takes place four hundred years after the founding of the Republic. Rome is brought vividly to life as an allegory for power struggles in any era. In the show, the days of shared power has come to an end and everyone is fighting for their part of the new structure - it’s the perfect backdrop for betrayal, excess, and corruption.

Blending historical figures like Julius Caesar, Marc Antony, and Cleopatra with their own narratives, “Rome” was a gorgeous blend of style and substance. »

The Best Worst Arnold Schwarzenegger Movies

18 November 2009 10:32 PM, PST | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

A true action hero, Arnold Schwarzenegger is also the ultimate source of classically terrible and amazing films. Forget G.I. Joe, Schwarzenegger is the real American hero proving that in America  it’s  as easy to have a lucrative film career without talent or experience as it is to be a senator of a major state without a political background. Hercules in New York. (1970) Directed by Arthur Allan Seidelman. In the film that launched his career, an inexperienced and barely English-Speaking Arnold takes the stage as Hercules (To be honest, the title of the movie really wraps up the plot). Notoriously funny and wonderfully bad, his voice is dubbed the entire film, and only much later when it was re-released on DVD was Arnold’s real voice re-dubbed. It also marked the beginning of his classic one-liners, “Ha ha ha, you have strucked Hercules!”. Conan the Barbarian. (1982) Directed by John Milius. »

Sgt Rock marches into the future and on to the screen

10 November 2009 4:47 PM, PST | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

Since Warner Bros set up a DC Entertainment unit to oversee adaptations of characters from DC Comics, fans have been eagerly waiting for news of which crimefighting crusader will next be heading to the big screen.

If you were hoping for an announcement on Wonder Woman, Flash, Green Arrow or any of the other big names, think again.

Today came the news that a long-planned film based on DC's Second World War hero Sgt Rock is moving forward. And it will instead be set in the future.

According to Heat Vision, I Am Legend director Francis Lawrence is to helm the movie while Chad St John is penning the screenplay.

Producer Joel Silver, who has for nearly 20 years been trying to get Rock on to the screen, is teaming with Akiva Goldsman, who has just come on board as a co-producer, to finally get the film made for Warner Bros. »

Dolph Lundgren ponders role in mythical Conan reboot

10 November 2009 12:20 PM, PST | ReelLoop.com | See recent Reel Loop news »

Dolph Lundgren is cool. I don’t care how many direct-to-dvd movies he does a month, Lundgren is a complete bad-ass. So much of a bad-ass in fact that Lundgren might show up in the highly-rumored Conan reboot.

“I’ve talked to the producers about doing something for Conan,’” Lundgren said. “It’s too early,” he said, stating that he wouldn’t know anything certain until “probably next year.”

The updated Conan will directed by Marcus Nispel for Lionsgate. The reboot is expected to more faithful to Robert E. Howard’s Conan the Barbarian than the Arnold Schwarzenegger films were.

Lundgren will be seen in Sylvester Stallone’s action-ensemble pic, The Expendables, where the 52-year-old will play a Swedish sniper named Gunnar Jensen. The film is expected to be released on August 20th.

Conan the Barbarian was released in 1982 from director John Milius. Milius later went to direct Red Dawn. »

Is Sgt. Rock Finally Happening?

10 November 2009 12:40 AM, PST | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

Benjamin Franklin once said, “The only things certain in life are death and taxes.” Well, if the former Us President had lived to see the present day, he doubtless would have added one more thing to the list: “…and Joel Silver trying to make Sgt. Rock.”Silver has been trying to get an adaptation of the DC Comics’ World War II-based, cigar-chewing, bullet-spewing tough guy hero off the ground for as long as Empire can remember. So long, in fact, that Arnold Schwarzenegger was tipped to play Rock for a long time, and virtually every action writer worth a damn in Hollywood has taken a crack at the script, from Brian Helgeland to Steven E. DeSouza to John Milius. And all to no avail. Most recently, Guy Ritchie, of all people, took a stab at it, attaching himself to direct, before moving onto another comic book for Silver, Lobo. But »

'Sgt. Rock' Set in Today.s Time?

9 November 2009 9:30 PM, PST | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

Francis Lawrence, who directed I Am Legend, is attached to another action-adventure film set in the future. However, this one revolves around a World War II hero/DC Comics character, and by set in the future, we mean the present day.

According to The Hollywood Reporter’s Heat Vision blog, producers Joel Silver and Akiva Goldsman are looking at the Sgt. Rock comic as the basis for a big-budget actioner along the lines of The Dirty Dozen. The recent success of Inglourious Basterds might have made the project seem more palatable, since expensive period war movies — especially those lacking the contemplative tone of a Saving Private Ryan — have not exactly been on many Hollywood studios' to-do lists.

Chad St. John, who has written a remake of the sci-fi film Outland, will be writing the modern take on Sgt. Rock, with Silver and Goldsman expected to bring it to Warner Bros. »

The 1600's don't get nearly enough love in cinema, and it's a real shame. The era of witch hunts, musketeers, and flintlock pistols is a ripe one, and has been the setting for such gems as "Captain Blood", "The Three Musketeers" (partial to the Oliver Reed one, of course; totally badass), and "The Conqueror Worm" (aka "Witchfinder General"). And as much money as the "Pirates of the Caribbean" films have made, their success has led more to the greenlighting of franchises based on rides and brands than any real cinematic rediscovery of the 17th century. Anyway, there's something genuinely irresistible about this time frame, at least for me.

I don't know if it's the constant specter of religious strife in the pre- and post-Cromwell era, the fact that this part of »

Patrick Swayze: 1952-2009

Patrick Swayze: 1952-2009

By

Alex Simon

All films buffs have guilty pleasures. You know, those movies that high-minded cineastes love to turn their noses up at, especially critics for The New York Times, people with MFAs in some sort of film-related field, or just plain snobs who refuse to acknowledge anything released on celluloid that doesn’t have English subtitles and at least one reference to death, either as a character or a metaphor (and oftentimes both). Patrick Swayze was the undisputed King of the Guilty Pleasure. From his screen debut in Skatetown, USA in 1979, to his final appearance on television’s "The Beast" as a take-no-prisoners cop, Swayze was an unapologetic good ol’ boy who happened to be a classically-trained dancer, student of martial arts and Eastern philosophy, and possessor of an Iq that was nothing to sneeze at. In fact, he closely resembled Dalton, his character in »

Five Rules for Great DVD Commentaries

10 September 2009 4:15 AM, PDT | ifc.com | See recent IFC news »

Whenever someone asks me what my favorite DVD special feature is, I always pick audio commentary. But from talking with other cinephiles and casual film fans alike, I've begun to feel like I'm in the minority. I hear the same complaints, over and over, about filmmaker tracks: they're boring, they're uninformative, and so on. To which I always reply, you don't like them because you're not listening to the right ones.

There are plenty of bad commentary tracks out there, but there are plenty of bad movies out there too; the trick is to find the good ones. From my highly subjective perspective, here are the rules that govern all great DVD commentary tracks.

1. Don't Just Tell Us What's Happening on the Screen

Just about the worst thing you can do on a commentary track is simply reiterate what the audience is seeing. Thankfully, it's not an especially common phenomenon nowadays, »

Nicolas Winding Refn to Direct Modern Western Only God Forgives and a Gore Verbinksi Heist Film

8 September 2009 2:45 PM, PDT | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

The momentum behind writer/director Nicolas Winding Refn---a talent of significant interest for many of our staff---is culminating into numerous "man's man"-sounding projects. The Dane auteur behind the Pusher Trilogy and this winter's rollicking Bronson remains attached to direct Keanu Reeves in Jeckyll, a big-budget take on Dr. Jeckyll & Mr. Hyde, that would introduce him to the domestic mainstream. This week, reviews for Refn's violent Viking epic, Valhalla Rising, have started to pile in from the Venice Film Festival: Variety compared it to a redundant and nearly dialogue-free "grunge-and-gore" flick in the John Milius mold. On a bad day with a skull chalice, might that be welcome? Add to this two new projects: a "modern Western" with the foreboding title Only God Forgives and an untitled heist film for producer Gore Verbinski (PoTC trilogy). The order of production is presently unknown. More info follows... The logline for Only »

Bringing In 4 For Red Dawn

Continuing on the ever going trend, that does not appear to be dying anytime soon, of remakes in Hollywood comes to bigger chunk of casting for Red Dawn. Despite the grumblings that will most likely be made right now due to casting for this film period, let me tell you who’s jumping onto the film. Josh Hutcherson, Isabel Lucas, Connor Cruise and Edwin Hodge are all throwing themselves on board with Chris Hemsworth, Adrianne Palicki and Josh Peck in the Dan Bradley directed version of this 1984 film.

Set to start up initial filming next month, the cast is believed to undergo a military training program prior to it. The film is about a group of teenagers who form an insurgency when their town is invaded — this time by Chinese and Russian soldiers (THR). The script is penned up by Carl Ellsworth (The Last House on the Left) and John Milius »
