Review: 'Logan's Run' on Blu-ray

18 November 2009 2:34 PM, PST | Comicmix.com | See recent Comicmix news »

What a difference a year makes. In 1976, MGM released a film based on William F. Nolan and George Clayton Johnson’s 1967 novel Logan’s Run. Generally lambasted by the press, it may have been a nadir in science fiction films putting studios off the genre until the following May, when 20th Century Fox looked forward with Star Wars.

Warner Home Video has just released Logan’s Run on Blu-ray and it finally gave me a chance to see the movie, something that somehow eluded me back in High School. It has most certainly not aged well and I can see why Roger Ebert called it a "vast, silly extravaganza", which changed the novel in some ways for the better but failed to visually interest us in the society.

In the film, directed by Michael Anderson, the biggest change was in the location of society: domed and hermetically sealed as compared »

Heat and Logan’s Run Blu-ray Reviews

10 November 2009 10:26 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Catalog titles Ftw. I am one of those rare people who enjoy being “double dipped.” I like upgrading to Blu-ray if I love a film, because you only get to watch a movie for the first time once, and so a different and better transfer is a reason (at least for me) to get excited about a film you’ve seen a number of times. When I would go see something in the theater on multiple occasions, I’d often go to different theaters (or failing that, different seats). My reviews of the Blu-rays of Heat and Logan’s Run after the jump.

Heat is one of the great American films. It took me a while to come to that, and I still think that Michael Mann’s finest film is The Insider, but there’s no denying Heat. Robert De Niro stars as Neal McCauley, a high line criminal who knows how to rob. »

[DVD Review] Logan's Run

9 November 2009 4:00 AM, PST | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

The best science fiction takes modern perspectives on culture and society and forces us to see them in a new light by casting them in an alternate form. In the case of 1976’s futuristic epic Logan’s Run, directed by Michael Anderson and starring Brit film icon Michael York and Americana dream girl Farrah Fawcett (who receives some top billing despite having a relatively minor role), basic attitudes towards age, religions and the advancement of civilization come under fire through a variety of well-crafted devices and metaphors. Further anchoring Logan’s Run in the echelon’s of great sci-fi are stellar performances and what were once considered cutting edge special effects – all of it remastered for a Blu-ray release.

In the year 2274, the society of Logan’s Run exists in a state of hedonistic perfection: everyone lives out of the range of nature’s harsh influences within domes where all »

Stephen Fry is Writing Peter Jackson's Dambusters Remake?

19 October 2009 7:10 AM, PDT | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

Peter Jackson has been a very busy man recently. Not only did he produce and help successfully release District 9 this summer, but he's finishing up the last bit of work on The Lovely Bones, due out in December. He's also been helping direct The Adventures of Tintin with Steven Spielberg and, let's not forget, writing and preparing The Hobbit to shoot with Guillermo del Toro. However, according to a new report on Ain't It Cool News tonight, there's another project he's been working on - Dambusters, the remake of classic 1955 war film directed by Michael Anderson. And if all goes well, it may be the very next project he directs. AICN has a report from a reader (which makes me a bit worried about the accuracy of this) who attended a charity event with English actor/writer/comedian Stephen Fry. During the Q&A, Fry apparently revealed that Peter Jackson »

Augmented Reality Injects Life Into the Business Card

17 July 2009 7:30 AM, PDT | Fast Company | See recent Fast Company news »

You may think the business card has a limited lifespan in this digital era, but one developer has found a way to prove that wrong, while simultaneously showing off his augmented reality programming. And it's mighty impressive.

This video is the work of action-script developer James Alliban. As an expert programmer, he realized that one great way to promote his skills was to combine cheap online sourced business cards from Moo.com, which lets you customize what gets printed on the cards, and augmented reality--the technology we've been hearing about recently in connection with next-gen smartphone apps. He recorded a video clip promoting himself in far more detail than could fit on a small strip of paper, then used a bar-code like pattern on the card to drive an augmented reality animation of the video clip.

The result is powerful, and undoubtedly will serve Mr Alliban well in his career. »

Going ‘Up’ With Hollywood’s Greatest Balloons

29 May 2009 9:00 AM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Forgive me for being rather corny, but is there anything as sweet and simple as a balloon? No matter how old you are, if someone hands you a balloon your day gets just a little bit brighter. Who out there hasn’t taken hold of one and hoped, just this once, that it would take off with you attached? Who hasn’t wondered how many it would take to send you flying into the air? Few of us have ever dreamed as ambitiously as Carl (Ed Asner), the elderly hero of Disney/Pixar’s “Up,” which floats into theaters this Friday. Carl painstakingly figures out just how many balloons it would take to carry his whole house into the sky, and he flies away on the adventure of a lifetime.

In the spirit of Carl, I’ve decided to list five of Hollywood’s greatest balloons. It was tough work, »

“Nazis. I hate these guys.”: 15 WWII Movies Worth Watching Before You See Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds.

26 May 2009 4:10 PM, PDT | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

Who knew that the Nazis -- one of the most brutal regimes in the history of brutal regimes -- would be responsible for such fun, mind-blowingly awesome entertainment? The second I see a dude in a grey German uniform and an eye patch enter the frame, I’m like ‘Whoa. That Nazi is going to provide me a great amount of entertainment this evening’. So, with Inglorious Bastards having recently premiered at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival, I figured I'd put together a list of some awesome WW2 films as a resource for anyone wanting to beef up their WW2 film knowledge before checking out Tarantino's self-proclaimed 'masterpiece'. It's worth noting that I focused on older films -- pre-1980 for the most part -- and only the stories featuring Nazi's. It was tough to cut this down to 15 films, but I'm sure you all will be able to come up with »
