Their Best Role: Meryl Streep

18 November 2009 9:02 AM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Welcome to a new series here on Cinematical where we select an actor or actress and the role we think is their all time best.

Last August, "Meryl Streep" wrote an op-ed piece for The Onion called "Name One Masterpiece Of Cinema That I've Starred In." It was really written by the Onion staff, of course, but they (and Streep) made a good point. For a woman who is very possibly the finest living actor of any sex, she has made very few truly unforgettable films. Her resume doesn't contain anything quite like Rear Window, The Godfather, Chinatown or Pulp Fiction. Case in point: the article brings up Kramer vs. Kramer. "Streep" says "I'd watch it if it were on," but it isn't really a masterpiece. Also, it's more Dustin Hoffman's movie than Streep's movie, and if you look at it that way, it ranks pretty far down on Hoffman's list of classics. »

My Hollywood Breakthrough: We Destroyed the Film

By Vilmos Zsigmond (to Eric Estrin)

The dazzling light show that served as interplanetary communication in 1977’s “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” helped win both cinematographer Vilmos Zsigmond and the film their only Oscar. Zsigmond was nominated three other times as well and won a lifetime achievement award from the Asc for a legendary career that has spanned decades and included multiple collaborations with such directors as Steven Spielberg, Robert Altman, Michael Cimino and Woody Allen. He’s the subject, along with his late friend, colleague and fellow Hungarian émigré Laszlo Kovacs, of... »

Among them are Curzio Malaparte’s The Forbidden Christ, Alf Sjoberg’s Miss Julie, Akira Kurosawa’s To Live, Jean-Luc Godard’s Breathless, Michael Cimino’s The Deer Hunter, Zhang Yimou’s Red Sorghum, Niels Arden Oplev’s We Shall Overcome, and Paul Thomas Anderson’s Magnolia. 500 million dollars

10 November 2009 | Cineman.ch/en | See recent Cineman.ch/en news »

$500 million: that's the reported budget approved by Fox for James Cameron to direct "Avatar", according to the New York Times. Published a few days ago, the article in the New York Times has Us industry players in an uproar. In the paper, journalist Michael Cieply has added up his estimate of the "Avatar" budget, figuring that James Cameron's movie will cost Fox and other investors about half a billion dollars by the time it's finished, marketing included. In the first sentence, Cieply shocked readers and Fox executives alike, who may be facing the repercussions of negative buzz surrounding "Avatar": "Can a movie studio make money on a film based on an original and unfamiliar story, with no Hollywood superstars, a vanishing DVD market and a price tag approaching $500 million?" He also brought up the worrying fact that the first trailer and sneak preview of "Avatar" did not generate the expected favorable response, »

Podcast: Tom Noonan (The House of the Devil)

31 October 2009 6:52 AM, PDT | GreenCine Daily | See recent GreenCine Daily news »

Among other things, Tom Noonan is a musician, playwright, and writer-director of two acclaimed films (What Happened Was, The Wife), but most will sooner recognize this tall, reserved but eerily intense gentleman as a memorable character actor from films as diverse as Manhunter, Mystery Train, and Synecdoche New York. His latest chance to effortlessly steal scenes arrives in Ti West's wonderfully slow-burning, retro-horror flick, The House of the Devil: Sam (Jocelin Donahue) is a pretty college sophomore, so desperate to earn some cash for a deposit on an apartment that she accepts a babysitting job even after she finds out there is no baby. Mr. and Mrs. Ulman (cult actors Tom Noonan and Mary Woronov) are the older couple who lure Sam out to their creeky Victorian mansion deep in the woods, just in time for a total lunar eclipse. Megan (Greta Gerwig) is Sam's best friend, who »

Ten Years Ago Today...We First Saw Dead People

6 August 2009 6:10 PM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Hello, all. Kieran here (aka the Know nothing Know it All). Ten years ago today, M. Night Shyamalan's The Sixth Sense hit multiplexes to massive audience and critical acclaim. Massive (it bears repeating). Shyamalan was essentially unknown, as was little Haley Joel Osment (the film's star, even though he landed a supporting actor Oscar nod). Still, the film spent five weeks at number one spot at the box office—no small feat these days for films not about Batman. 2009 is more than half over, and only two films have managed to remain number one for two or more consecutive weeks—Paul Blart and Transformers (yikes). The Sixth Sense achieved a lot of cultural capital.

Revisit it. It's still utterly watchable, not for the moments where it genuinely scares you (of which, there are plenty) but for its moments of true human drama. Plus, I love a film that's both »

The Comeback Kids - The '90s Westerns That Made Movie History

While most movie fans were distracted by Reality Bites and Titanic, Western stars were quietly reclaiming their place in American cinema. Any Western fan will tell you that Michael Cimino sunk the genre in 1980 with his overwrought, under-attended flop Heaven's Gate. After that jaw-dropping failure, production of Westerns slowed to a trickle and cowboys seemed relegated to reruns of Gunsmoke. But lo and behind! The '90s brought about »

The Deer Hunter (1978)

Streep at 60

A Retrospective Celebration in June and maybe some of July, too.

At the risk of cries of sacrilege I decided to try a screening experiment with The Deer Hunter for my Streep project. I have never seen the movie (I know) and I opted to only watch the Meryl Streep parts.

"Why???" I can hear purists (and other versions of myself) screaming. Well, I've become fascinated of late with the idea that audiences are consuming their movies in an entirely different way than they used to. In the age of YouTube, termite criticism, DVR, cable, home theaters and dozens of "exclusive" clips from new movies available on hundreds of sites before the movie in question ever opens, it's now quite common to experience movies not as 90-120-180 minute narratives but as a collection of acted fragments both before and after the first full screening. Sometimes the movie »

7 Terrible Films That Star Oscar Winners

Just what is it about winning a golden baldie that makes some actors to appear in total tat? Look at Hilary Swank, who won for Million Dollar Baby, but still decided to make The Reaping? It’s not just actors – directors can suffer from the “curse” too – Michael Cimino went from winning for The Deer Hunter to making Heaven’s Gate. As a warning to this year’s nominees, here are the stars that went from bagging gold to slumming it… 1. The Film: Supergirl (1984) The Star: Faye... .
