The National Board of Review has named Jason Reitman’s Up in the Air as the top film of 2009. The New-York based organization is traditionally the first to announce their picks for the year’s best and they like the Paramount picture starring George Clooney, which conveniently opens this weekend in limited release.
Aside from best feature, the film won three other awards. Clooney picked up best actor in a tie with Morgan Freeman of Invictus, supporting actress went to Anna Kendrick, and Reitman received kudos for the adapted screenplay (my favorite script).
Other notables: Clint Eastwood was recognized as the best director for Invictus (Nbr liked him last year for Gran Torino), Carey Mulligan for best actress in An Education, and documentary front-runner The Cove won. The biggest surprises were Woody Harrelson winning best supporting actor for The Messenger and Star Trek on their top 10 of the year. Don’t get me wrong, »

Matt Damon has praised director Clint Eastwood for providing him with a gratifying work experience on the set of Invictus. In Eastwood's forthcoming film, Damon plays a South African rugby player who helps Nelson Mandela (Morgan Freeman) bring African citizens together through the 1995 Rugby World Cup, after the fall of Apartheid. "I felt completely fulfilled creatively," said Damon at Tuesday's Museum of the Moving Image gala in New York City honouring Eastwood. Damon revealed that the helmer's work (more) »

The first big award every year that is often interpreted as a bellwether of Oscar gold is the National Board of Review's award for Best Film. The board named its entire award slate today, and Jason Reitman's Up in the Air took Best Film. That's not a lock for the film as a guaranteed Best Picture contender, but it's a pretty good indication that we'll see Reitman's film in the final list of ten next year. Granted, that was already more or less a lock, so read what you will into this award. The full list of Nbr awards is after the jump. More than anything else, this is a really safe set of nods. I'm slightly surprised that Invictus didn't take Best Film, but Clint Eastwood did get Best Director. The split for Best Actor between George Clooney and Morgan Freeman only underlines that the Nbr wants to »

Matt Damon was back to work on The Adjustment Bureau yesterday filming at Yankee Stadium, which is enemy territory for the die-hard Red Sox fan. He's focusing on his current project, but another of his films, Invictus, hits the big screen next weekend. Matt recently stepped out to honor that film's director, Clint Eastwood, with an event at the Museum of the Moving Image. Matt admitted that his wife was a big factor in his decision to tackle the role of a South African rugby captain, saying, "I have come to judge good jobs and good directors by how my wife feels about them. . . and my wife loves Clint Eastwood." The National Board of Review have announced their winners. Their ceremony will be held on.
Film: Up In The Air
Director: Clint Eastwood, Invictus
Actor (tie): Morgan Freeman, Invictus and George Clooney, Up In The Air
This is Clooney's 3rd personal Nbr prize in 7 years. The situation with Clint Eastwood is yet more extreme. This is Clint's 4th personal Nbr prize in 10 years. Every film he's made since 2003 has found a home in their top ten list -- all seven of them, even Flags of Our Fathers -- and in two of those year's his films hogged 20% of their top ten list. In addition to Clint's 4 prizes, 2 of his films have won their Best Picture prize.
Actress: Carey Mulligan, An Education
Supporting Actor: Woody Harrelson, The Messenger

The National Board of Review continued its love affair with George Clooney and Clint Eastwood when unveiling award winners today. Clooney's "Up in the Air" reaped prizes for best picture, lead actor (Clooney), supporting actress (Anna Kendrick) and adapted screenplay (Jason Reitman, Sheldon Turner). Its helmer, Reitman, was cheated out of the director's award by Nbr fave Clint Eastwood ("Invictus"). "Invictus" star Morgan Freeman tied Clooney for the lead actor's laurels. Two years ago Clooney won best actor for "Michael Clayton." His "Good Night, and Good Luck" was voted best picture of 2005. Clint's "Letters From Iwo Jima" won best picture of 2006 and "Mystic River" best flick of 2003. Last year he won best... »

There are a few surprises, but not at the top of the list, for the National Board of Review's 2009 film awards. Up in the Air was named Best Film, and this is the fourth time Best Actor winner George Clooney has picked up three Nbr honors in four years (Good Night, and Good Luck won Best Picture and Clooney was named Best Actor for Michael Clayton).
He tied with Morgan Freeman from Invictus for the top acting prize, and that film also won Clint Eastwood Best Director. Unlike a lot of these year-end awards, Nbr does a top ten list (actually a top 11 because the Best Picture winner is excluded from the countdown), and that's where the surprises might be - no Avatar, which Nbr voters haven't seen, no Precious, and no Lovely Bones or Nine. Because they vote so damn early, there's a possibility several movies weren't screened in time for the deadline. »

This is going to be a great month. No matter whether these big and small movies fall flat on their faces or not there’s going to be plenty to choose from – especially for those who want to keep up with important films.
First up is Avatar, one of the biggest gambles of this decade. Will the same kind of crowd that saw The Dark Knight or Transformers multiple times venture to movie theatres to see a 150-minute-long 3-D film that features tall blue creatures? It’s up in the air.
Which reminds me of a few more titles that should be worth checking out, one of them being Jason Reitman’s new film with George Clooney. The drama-comedy about a man who fires people for a living has been getting great buzz from its successful festival runs, with Oscar talk flying around as smoothly as paper airplanes.
But, Up In the Air »

The 2009 Oscar race is officially Up in the Air. The George Clooney vehicle about love in the age of layoffs has become one of the Oscar front-runners after being named best picture by the National Board of Review on Thursday. Clooney shared a win for best actor with Morgan Freeman, who won for his portrayal of Nelson Mandela in Invictus, directed by his longtime collaborator Clint Eastwood, who was named best director. British newcomer Carey Mulligan was named best actress for playing a precocious teen in An Education, while The Messenger's Woody Harrelson and Air's Anna Kendrick were recognized for their supporting performances. »

Hey there, my prediction came true, and perhaps this gut feeling I have about Jason Reitman's Up In the Air is accurate as the National Board of Review just named the Paramount pic the best film of 2009.
Continuing its reign, George Clooney also won Best Actor in a shared prize with Morgan Freeman who stars in Invictus as Nelson Mandela, and my current pic to win the Oscar Best Actress, Carey Mulligan, took top honors in the Best Actress category for An Education.
Anna Kendrick continued the Up In the Air love with a Best Supporting Actress win and Reitman was also recognized for Best Adapted Screenplay.
However, Eastwood maintained his Nbr presence with a Best Director win as well as seeing Invictus get listed as one of the top ten films of the year alongside the likes of Star Trek, Where the Wild Things Are, Inglourious Basterds and 500 Days of Summer. »

The National Board of Review has chosen Jason Reitman’s Up in the Air as the Best Picture of 2009, but as Anne Thompson states, the National Board of Review tends to be a bellwether of where Oscar momentum is heading, but not necessarily a forecaster of where it will be. However, it’s a near-certainty that Up in the Air will be getting some Oscar nominations because not only is it in the zeitgeist (the main character Ryan Bingham fires people for a living), but it’s just a damn good film and critics agree with an 86% on Rotten Tomatoes (look for my review tonight). If you’d like a track record for the Nbr, its Best Picture choice has gone on to be nominated for Best Picture Oscar nine of the past ten years (their selection of Quills in 2000 was a swing and a miss), and won the award the past two years. »

Earlier this week, the Gotham Awards kicked off award season, with the nominations for the Indie Spirit awards following shortly after. And today, we have our next round of honors and for the most part, the first major awards to be handed out. The National Board of Review -- an institution that is quite proud of its ability to predict (in a sense) the Oscar Best Picture winner (at least recently) -- has named Jason Reitman's latest film Up in the Air as the Best Film of 2009. As well, they've honored Clint Eastwood with a nod for Best Director (Invictus), split the Best Actor nod between George Clooney (Up in the Air) and Morgan Freeman (Invictus), and giving rising star Carey Mulligan her first award of the season, Best Actress for her performance in An Education. For Paramount, the love for Up in the Air couldn't have come at a better time. The »

For the past two years in a row, the National Board of Review (aka Nbr) and the Academy Awards have each honored the same film as their top pick of the year. Will that streak now continue with Jason Reitman's Up in the Air? Paramount couldn't have picked a better release date for Up in the Air because 24 hours after the film was named best of the year by Nbr, it will arrive in theaters in limited release. Aside from taking top honors, Reitman's film about a corporate downsizer who can't seem to connect with anything (or anyone) also won Best Adapted Screenplay (Jason Reitman, Sheldon Turner) and Best Supporting Actress (Anna Kendrick).
Other big winners include Clint Eastwood for Best Director (Invictus), Morgan Freeman for Best Actor (Invictus), Carey Mulligan for Best Actress (An Education) and Woody Harrelson for Best Supporting Actor (The Messenger). The Cove, which is »

"Up in the Air" was the big winner in the National Board of Review's 2009 awards, which were announced on Thursday afternoon.
The Jason Reitman film was named Best Film, while Clint Eastwood took the Best Director award for "Invictus." "Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire," which is considered an Oscar frontrunner, was not included on the Nbr's list of the year's Top 10 films, and neither was Rob Marshall's musical "Nine."
In the acting categories, Morgan Freeman and George Clooney shared the best actor award for “Invi... »
